Circulo Andino is pleased to present Mandi Bane, doctoral candidate in
Sociology, THIS WEDNESDAY, 14 March.
Please join us from 11.30-1p in West Hall 242 for lunch and Mandi's
talk, entitled "Are you a Pachakutik? Membership and Representation
in the Indigenous Movement of Cotopaxi, Ecuador."
Summary:
The CONAIE (Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador) is
many things: a social movement organization with a demonstrated ability
for mass mobilization; an organization that works inside state
institutions and NGOs; the "government," or official voice of all
indigenous Ecuadorians; and a loose confederation of local
organizations, each with a great degree of autonomy in pursuing its own
agenda. It is so many things, in fact, that one might ask, what or
who, exactly, is the CONAIE?
Drawing on two years of fieldwork in the province of Cotopaxi, we will
explore this question by looking at issues of membership and
representation in the indigenous movement.

9th Annual MLK Winter Luncheon & Discussion Series
Description: Solidarity and Coalition Building: Breaking Down Walls, Broadening Horizons Often the most challenging experiences yield the largest rewards; this is especially salient in the decision to pursue international experiences. The past few years have seen a marked increase in the number of students gaining credit in study-abroad programs. Furthermore, there are many opportunities at even the smallest companies to work abroad in the corporate world. How do we strengthen ties between the University of Michigan and universities abroad? What can be done to break any barriers that stand between people and international opportunities?

About the film:
A documentary about the working class African-American young female bodied
people in New York City who identify as “Aggressives”. If forced to choose
from the more widely known descriptions of sexual and gender orientation, the six people whose lives are profiled in “The Aggressives” are almost
impossible to label. They are beyond butch, masculine-identified but not transgender.
