Know Your Rights Forum
If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.
The Welfare Rights Union and the Washtenaw County Workers' Center are pleased to announce the Know Your Rights Forum to be held on Saturday, May 26, 2007 from 11am-3pm at Perry Child Development Center at 550 Perry Street in Ypsilanti (near the corner of Harriet and Hamilton). There will be no charge for admission.
The agenda for the program will stand: Human Rights, Welfare Rights, Civil Rights, and Worker Rights. Elena Herrada from the Centro Obrero (Workers' Center) in Detroit and Ron Lare, who is one of the Soldiers of Solidarity (UAW), will be speaking at this event. Moreover, we will have Ron Scott (of "For My People" television fame) speaking on civil rights, Alison Montgomery speaking on human rights, and Maureen Taylor (Chair of the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization) finishing things up with a rousing call for welfare rights!
We will also be having cultural presentations/performances in between speakers. One local performer, Stacie Sheldon, will offer a sampling of Ojibwe hand drumming. Finally (and most importantly!), food will be provided.
Community organizations and individuals interested in participating or volunteering time and/or resources should contact Alison Montgomery at montgomery_alison@yahoo.com or karenschaumann@yahoo.com

This exhibition of work in a wide range of media hopes to raise awareness about the realities of mental illness. How does mental illness change the life experiences of those with these diseases? If you have already registered for the Ethics in Engineering Research workshop on 5/1, please disregard this message. If you haven't, please consider doing so. This is the first time that the Office of Graduate Education has offered a workshop on this topic, and it should be a very interesting session. It will run from 1:15-3:30 in the Johnson Rooms, 3rd Floor, Lurie Engineering Center. Judith Nowack, who is the Associate Vice President of Research for UM, and Professor Steven Wright will be on a panel with Ted Way, a PhD student. This will provide three different perspectives on how to conduct responsible research, how to overcome pressure to perform unethical tasks, and how to interact with your research advisor. A light snack will be provided.
